Councillor Joy was delighted to attend the Medway Mini Youth Games football tournament, celebrating the teamwork and sporting spirit of young people from across Medway.
The event was split over two days and into three different competitions involving over fifty schools from Medway and the surrounding area.
It brought together the children of Medway to compete in a friendly and inclusive environment, showcased the importance of grassroots sport in promoting physical activity, confidence, and community engagement.
The event also helps develop over twenty new young referees in a partnership between Medway Sports (on behalf of Medway Council) and Kent FA.
Speaking after the event, Councillor Joy said:
‘Despite the weather, it was pleasing to see so many of our schools competing over the two days. The way the event is set up allows children of all abilities to take part and represent their schools.
Having had the privilege to be a parent, I know what events like this mean to the children of Medway.
I would also like to acknowledge the new referees that start their journey at this event, with one from last year’s cohort recently recognised nationally for her contribution to refereeing, who commented that refereeing has helped build her confidence. Showing not only the benefit to our primary aged children, but also to our older children’
This year Councillor Joy had the privilege to give out medals and trophies to all the successful teams for two of the competitions.
We, as a group congratulate all participants and wish them continued success in their sporting journeys.
