The 27th January 2026 marked the 81st anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz Birkenau.
Each year, the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust sets a theme for commemorations. This year was ‘Bridging Generations’. The theme highlighted the role of the next generation in remembrance and the importance of engaging actively with the past and lessons learnt from tragedy.
Medway Council marked Holocaust Memorial Day by raising the commemorative flag at its Gun Wharf office. Councillor Perfect, Leader of the Opposition, Councillor Tejan and Councillor Trevor Clarke, the Worshipful Mayor of Medway, attended the event, which served as a tribute to all those who lost their lives under Nazi persecution in Europe between 1933-1945 and in later atrocities. Since 2004, Medway Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration has been organised between the Council, Rochester Cathedral, Chatham Memorial Synagogue, Medway Youth Council and Inter Faith Action Forum.
A commemorative evening service was held at Rochester Cathedral, featuring contributions from local schools, faith leaders, Medway Youth Council, Kent Police, and a speech from the Bishop of Tonbridge, The Right Reverend Simon Burton-Jones.
