Statement from Leader of the Opposition of Medway Council and Medway Conservatives Leader, Cllr George Perfect:
"I'm pleased that Kent Leaders rejected the deeply flawed proposal for four unitary authorities brought forward by Medway Council in relation to local government reorganisation.
The model, proposed by the administration, developed without any consultation with other councils, was a non-starter before it was even made public. The administration went about its formation in completely the wrong way, without the support publicly of any other council across Kent and failed to grasp the importance of consensus. The attempt to then spin it as something universally loved, was equally as misjudged and simply laughable.
It proposed the breakup of areas that had been together within local government boundaries since the formation of the modern British state and sought to divide conurbations and towns for no clear reason or benefit. This proposal should now be ditched for good, and the administration should get behind either of the two options now being reviewed by the strategic partner. I am though now concerned that the administration will attempt to continue to pursue this proposal, which would be extremely misguided."
