Councillor Habib Tejan: Dedicated Public Servant and Former Mayor of Medway
Councillor Habib Tejan has been a committed representative of Medway, serving as a Conservative councillor for St Mary’s Island since May 2023. Prior to this, he represented River ward from 2015 to 2023. He is Shadow Cabinet Member for Business Support, Digital and Climate Change, and Senior Member of the Shadow Cabinet.
Habib has held several leadership roles within Medway Council, including Chair of the Business Support and Digital Overview and Scrutiny Committee. His extensive committee experience also includes positions on the Audit Committee, Children and Young People Overview and Scrutiny Committee, Councillor Conduct Committee, and the Kent and Medway Police and Crime Panel.
In addition to his council duties, Habib made history as the Mayor of Medway from May 2019 to May 2021, becoming the first Mayor of Medway Unitary Authority of African heritage. Before this, he served as Deputy Mayor from May 2018 to May 2019. His tenure was marked by his commitment to democracy, diversity, and community development.
Beyond politics, Habib has a strong background in business and education. He holds postgraduate qualifications in Management from the Open University UK and the University of Liverpool Business School. He is also actively involved in charitable and nonprofit organisations, supporting initiatives that empower communities both in the UK and internationally.
Known for his charismatic leadership and dedication to public service, Councillor Tejan continues to work towards improving Medway’s governance, fostering economic growth, and advocating for the needs of local residents.
